Still waiting Feb 2011
A Letter to My Doctor
I’ve been having trouble reaching you to discuss my treatment plan and next steps. I’m not sure if you’ve been receiving my messages. I’ve called your office and left voicemails but haven’t heard back. I understand you’re very busy and caring for many patients, but please let me know how I should proceed.
On February 9th, I had the last steroid treatment covered by my current prescription. The next round should be a three-day course on March 9th, 10th, and 11th. I’ll need a new prescription for that and future treatments. I’m not certain who will be issuing these going forward.
I saw Dr. XXXXXXX last month. He doesn’t believe any additional treatment for the thyroid cancer is needed right now, though we’ll do more studies in September. He did recommend that I see a new neurologist. I’d like to know if you can suggest someone or refer me to the MS Clinic at OHSU to see a neuroimmunologist—or should I try to make those arrangements myself?
How Things Have Been Going
I skipped my steroid treatment on January 15th. On January 20th, I experienced an episode with my hands, and a few days later I began having balance and walking problems. My right leg felt much more numb, and I was walking with my foot turned out about 45 degrees. My fatigue worsened, and my speech problems increased. These issues continued until February 9th.
On February 9th, I received another steroid treatment. During the infusion, my left arm became very numb and my left hand felt extremely cold—both to the touch and internally. This lasted about an hour. Since then, I’ve had the usual side effects (insomnia, shakiness, rapid pulse), but the walking issues have improved. Coworkers tell me I’m speaking more clearly. The treatments do help, and I’m waiting to see if they’ll make me sick again post-infusion.
Overall, I’ve only had a few days since August when I haven’t felt unwell.
Please contact me by email or phone to let me know what’s happening. I’ll also call your office and leave another message in case these emails aren’t getting through.
Thank you for your care.
Odell
