Chapter 07: Divad and the End of Killing
He was working in the headquarters of the Orderists when Nor
came in after losing another battle. A million had died for her in a war to end
death, and she could not stand the death any longer. She knew that Divad was a
freedom fighter. She turned to him and said, “How can I stop the death?”
He turned to her and simply said, “All you have to do is
tell them not to die.”
This thought was so simple that, at first, she just laughed
and walked away. But later, she thought that this might work.
Soon, there was a battle for a whole sector under her
command and Dale wanted it.
As Dale’s ships started to move in, her commander sent out
the thought, “May I please take this space?” Nor’s commander sent out the
thought, “Please stand by.”
Nor received the message, “I am under attack! I feel that I
should give way.” Nor herself sent out the message, “You may not surrender. You
will defend that space and if they try to take it, kill them. You may not allow
yourself or your troops to die!”
When this message was received, the thought went out, “I
cannot give you this space.” Soon, the message came back, “May I kill you?” But
the thought came back, “No, I cannot let you do that. May I kill you?” Dale’s
leader thought, “Yes, you may.” Soon, all of Dale’s forces lay dead.
This was the beginning of the end of the war. It did not
take long for Dale to find out what had happened, and of course, she knew what
she had to do to combat it. During the next battle, she also gave the order not
to die, thinking that this would put the freedom fighters in a position that
they would have to fight.
The order was received and the thought came from both sides
that neither would give permission to die, so no one died.
Nor found herself in a state of confusion not knowing what
to do. It seemed that the war was at its end and no one had won. She remembered
the man who had given her the no-death defense and she called him in.
“Divad,” she said, “once before I have listened to you and
you brought about the end of killing in this war. But no one has won. What
should I do now?”
“Nor,” said Divad, “you understand that the war you have
been fighting is wrong, but still you fight it. You look for order and not
freedom. You think that life needs to be led, and so does Dale. Neither of you
see that if we all respected each other, there could be no war. In place of
killing, try loving.”
It was this that led to the peace which lasted until the
return of the dead of all time.
